(updated 27th July 2012)
Following sterling work by Newcastle City Council and members of Elswick Harriers, this year’s Elswick Cup went ahead without any problems, and on a successful night for Tyne Bridge Harriers the club won the Men’s team prize and made a clean sweep of the Veteran Men awards.
The 5k race around Exhibition Park and Newcastle Town Moor was won by Nick Swinburn (Morpeth) in a time of 14m55s, with his team-mate, Matthew Nicholson, finishing 2nd in 15m25s. Elswick Harriers occupied 3rd and 4th spots (Tadele Muolugeta and Mark Mcleod respectively), but a tremendous showing of strength in depth meant Tyne Bridge collected the Men’s team prize, with Marc Fenwick (5th), Keith Smith (6th) and Kenny Mac (7th) forming the winning team.
Keith, Kenny and Paul Hilton collected the Top 3 individual prizes in the Veteran Men category.
The ladies from North Shields Poly narrowly pipped their counterparts from Tyne Bridge to win the Women’s team prize (unfortunately, a clerical error with the results meant Tyne Bridge were mistakenly announced as winners on the night).
On a personal level, there were several outstanding performances, with PB’s a plenty. Most notably, Paul Hilton recording his first ever sub 17min time for 5k (16:53); Keith Rooney who knocked 40 seconds off his time; Charlotte Carpenter got an amazing PB, reducing her PB from 25:21 to 23:51; and Lizzy Clamp, running 24:16, a minute quicker than her previous best of 25:16.
Congratulations to all the above.
