Congratulations to May member of the month Leoni Mitchell. Leoni’s participation in the May T&F fixture was spectacular! In particular, giving the 100m hurdles a go. Leoni is extremely encouraging to everyone at the club whether that be in training or races. She is a star and big asset to the club! Well done We hear more from Leoni below…
Leoni: Currently, I am not training for a race having recently completed the GNR 10k. This was my first race in many years and did not go as planned, though I have taken away learning from this experience.
Are you a hot or cold weather runner?
I refer to how cold I am constantly, not moaning, absolutely not! . I rarely run in shorts which makes me fairly certain, I may be a hot weather runner or maybe I am yet to acclimatise to the weather in the North-East.
How many times a week do you tend to exercise, are there other things you do that you think help your running?
At the moment, I am not training for a race, so I try to run four times a week; the club sessions during the weekdays, track sessions on Saturdays, and a long run on Sundays. Once a week, I will attend the gym for strength and conditioning and complete a yoga session to stretch, both of which I could do more.
What is the main piece of kit you couldn’t do without?
Sorry gents, as a female a supportive and strong bra, which I have learnt can be difficult to find (I would recommend checking out the Sweaty Betty sale).
What is your happiest running memory?
When I achieved my 5k, 10k, and marathon PBs, which was a while ago now. I had running friends and family supporting me at each event which made the experience more meaningful to me.
What is your favourite running event and why?
In London, with my previous running club, Orion Harriers who host the Orion 15; 15 miles of Cross-Country. The camaraderie, the food, and the setting of Epping Forest. Each year the weather has been different. At the end everyone is caked in mud but the energy is electric.
Oh! I have another one too. The London Marathon to spectate and volunteer not to run. I grew up in London and watching thousands of athletes run through this city, for personal reasons and/or to smash their times is wholly inspiring.
What is your running motto?
Two awesome ladies asked me this question and had me thinking: ‘You are stronger than what you are feeling now’.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting running?
Move from thinking to doing. There are so many resources out there now to support you in your running journey. At the end of the day, it’s one foot in front of the other.
