Report by Zoe Perowne
The sun was shining bright; it was a warm day. I was worried it might be a bit too warm for athletics but there was a cooling breeze at the Churchill track. This was my first athletics competition since joining Tyne Bridge Harriers and the first time I’d raced on a track. I was both excited and nervous!
My first race was the 100m. My legs were shaking with nerves as I lined up on the start line. The starting gun went off and I sprinted as fast as I could. I was pleased with my time and I was looking forward to my next event- the howler throw. I wasn’t very good at it! I’ve learnt I need to change my aim and Mum agreed to buy me a howler to practice with for next time.
Next race was the 800m. I’ve never raced 800m before so I wasn’t sure how well I would do. Despite being out of breath and very hot, I kept on running. I was determined to finish and was pleased to finish the race!
My last event was the long jump. At first I wasn’t sure why the other girls were marking out their sprint starts, then I figured it out and used a crack in the track as my marker!
At the start of my first ever track and field competition I wasn’t feeling confident that I’d know what to do but the marshals helped me. I really enjoyed the day and I’d recommend it to everyone, whatever level you are.
